Government issues safety advice after deaths at dream holiday location
The Foreign Office urged British visitors to use supervised swimming areas and follow local safety advice after five tourists died in May.
On Wednesday, the government issued a fresh travel alert for the Maldives, advising British travellers to exercise caution during water activities due to strong tidal currents that can drag swimmers away from the shoreline.
The updated guidance follows a tragic incident in May when five tourists died while scuba diving in the Vaavu Atoll, attempting to explore caves at a depth of 50 metres.
Officials also warned of fatal accidents involving boat propellers in the South Ari Marine Protected Area , where regulations requiring propeller guards are not yet fully enforced.
Travellers are urged to consult resort staff upon arrival to identify safe swimming areas; the government said, "Always take local advice before going into the sea."
You should read security information from your tour operator and maintain regular contact with resort staff to monitor changing water conditions, as being aware of potential dangers helps ensure safety.
