TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO, JUL 18 – The government empowered police with warrantless search and arrest powers to dismantle a prison-based crime syndicate responsible for kidnappings, assassinations, and violent crimes, police said.
- On July 18, 2025, the Trinidad and Tobago government declared a state of emergency, to curb a criminal network operating from the national prison system.
- After receiving Thursday intelligence reports, Allister Guevarro, Police Commissioner, said the reports revealed an organised crime syndicate, enabled by smuggled cellphones into prisons.
- The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service said, `These extraordinary measures are necessary to preserve public order, restore confidence in our national security framework, and ensure the continued stability of the country.`
- Authorities initiated inmate relocations, and police units have begun targeted overt and covert operations.
- Any further extension requires approval by both Houses of Parliament, with a three-fifths majority vote, and cannot exceed three months per extension.
