Study that Finds No Benefits From Alcohol Left Out of US Health Guidelines
Researchers found no safe level of alcohol and estimated one alcohol-attributable death for every 1,000 people at about seven drinks a week.
- On Tuesday, researchers independently released an alcohol health study commissioned by President Joe Biden's administration, after President Donald Trump's administration excluded findings from the Dietary Guidelines for Americans amid pushback from industry groups and the House Oversight Committee.
- The House Oversight Committee said the report is "irretrievably flawed." The alcohol industry added that "the process is fraught with bias," arguing the study authors held predetermined conclusions.
- Findings in the analysis showed no net health benefit from alcohol, as risks for premature death and more than 200 diseases rise steadily with consumption. At 14 drinks per week, men face a 1 in 25 lifetime risk of death.
- Denying the study was purposely omitted, Emily Hilliard, a spokesperson for the United States Department of Health and Human Services, said, "We reviewed the study alongside the broader body of available scientific evidence," regarding the new guidelines.
- Robert Vincent, a former official who led the research, accused the administration of "sidelining" the work. "What remains contested is whether evidence will meaningfully inform policy when it conflicts with commercial interests," Vincent added.
