Government approves UK's largest solar farm in Lincolnshire
The project is expected to power more than 180,000 homes a year and includes battery storage, developers said.
- The British government has approved the 800-MW Springwell Solar Farm in North Kesteven, Lincolnshire, poised to become the UK's largest solar project by power generation.
- As the 25th nationally significant clean energy project approved since July 2024, Springwell is part of the government's broader renewable energy strategy to power more than 12.5 million homes.
- Developed by EDF Power Solutions Limited and Luminous Energy, the site covers an area equivalent to 1,700 football pitches and is expected to power over 180,000 homes annually.
- Marc Williams from the Springwell Solar Action Group said he was "disgusted" and vowed to "keep fighting this," while Local Conservative councillor Rob Kendrick called it "sad news for Lincolnshire."
- Operational by 2029, Energy Minister Michael Shanks stated the project helps secure energy independence amid volatile fossil fuel markets and reduce exposure to global price swings.
