Demolition Begins on Last Pieces of Baltimore’s Collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge
BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, JUL 30 – Demolition of the collapsed bridge is progressing on schedule with a $2 billion reconstruction planned to finish by 2028, following a cargo ship collision that killed six workers.
- On Wednesday, July 30, 2025, Maryland Governor Wes Moore toured the Francis Scott Key Bridge demolition site with U.S. Senator Chris van Hollen, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott, and House members John Olszewski Jr. and Sarah Elfreth.
- After the bridge collapsed, investigators said Maryland officials failed to update risk assessments or safety protocols, following the ship Dali losing power before striking the southern pier on March 26, 2024.
- Six construction workers died, and it took more than a month to recover their bodies, while shipping and trucking were diverted around the Port of Baltimore causing major disruptions.
- The Maryland Transportation Authority says demolition is expected to take about nine months and remain on schedule, with reconstruction costing about $2 billion and finishing by 2028.
- While work continues, the Maryland Transportation Authority is developing procurement for a $160 million Pier Protection Project later this year, with the new Key Bridge expected to open in fall 2028.
