Government Denies Jho Low Entered Malaysia for 1MDB Talks
Liew Chin Tong said Malaysia still owes RM20.1 billion in 1MDB debts as he rejected reports that Low held secret talks in the country.
On Thursday, July 9, Deputy Finance Minister Liew Chin Tong denied that fugitive businessman Jho Low entered Malaysia for talks linked to the Development Berhad scandal, where Low faces charges for misappropriating at least US$4.5 billion.
The Sarawak Report and The Wall Street Journal reported in May that Low secretly entered the country with a Chinese delegation to negotiate Development Berhad debts, triggering parliamentary scrutiny.
Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman of Muda-Muar pressed Liew in the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday, calling the alleged entry "a very serious breach of Malaysia's sovereignty."
Total Development Berhad liabilities reached 51.4 billion ringgit, Liew noted, while Malaysia has recovered 31.3 billion ringgit in assets, leaving an estimated net liability of 20.1 billion ringgit.
The Madani government continues ongoing asset recovery efforts, including criminal and civil proceedings against Low, to restore global confidence and strengthen governance following the scandal's damage to Malaysia's international reputation.
