Children's Author Gordon Snell Dies Aged 93
The author and broadcaster wrote children’s books and RTÉ scripts after moving to Ireland in the early 1980s.
On Wednesday, children's author and RTÉ writer Gordon Snell died peacefully at his home, aged 93. He left behind a prolific legacy spanning more than 40 published books and decades of broadcasting work.
Born in Singapore in 1932, Snell studied at Oxford University before joining the BBC as a producer in London. There he met Maeve Binchy, and the couple eventually moved to Dalkey in Dublin.
Snell authored more than 40 books including The King of Quizzical Island and The Supermarket Ghost. He wrote scripts for the popular RTÉ children's show Wanderly Wagon, with Publisher Ivan Brien describing him as "creative, imaginative and a true gent."
Married for 35 years until Binchy's death in 2012, the couple famously dedicated their books to one another. Snell reflected that "we rejoiced in each other's successes," emphasizing neither felt jealous of the other's achievements.
The National Union of Journalists called Snell "one of the most respected writers in Ireland." Binchy's agent Christine Green added, "the world is a chiller place with his passing," reflecting widespread affection for the beloved writer.
