MPs to hear from privacy czar, tech giants, police on contentious ‘lawful access’ bill
Canada’s privacy commissioner, key representatives from major tech companies, and various policing and legal representatives will be testifying before MPs on Tuesday about the federal government’s proposal to bring the country’s “lawful access” regime into the digital age.
The complaints of Apple, Signal and others have been heard. After closing consultations on Bill C-22 on legal access to certain personal digital data, the federal government is somewhat volte-faced and invites Apple and Google to Ottawa to find the right balance between public safety and privacy.
