Google Rolls Out Expanded Theft Protection Features for Android Devices

  • On Tuesday, Google announced expanded theft protection tools available now for devices running Android 16+, aiming to prevent theft from escalating into wider data or financial loss.
  • Identity Check, introduced last year on Android 15 for Pixel and Samsung Galaxy devices, now covers all apps using the Android Biometric Prompt on Android 16+, including Google Password Manager.
  • Users will find a new toggle for Failed Authentication Lock with increased lockout time and 7 guesses allowed in 15 minutes instead of 36, Google said.
  • Remote Lock now offers an optional security question to ensure only the device owner can lock from android.com/lock, and Google enables Theft Detection Lock and Remote Lock by default on new devices in Brazil.
  • Theft Detection Lock uses on-device AI to detect snatch-and-run theft and quickly lock screens, while expanded biometric checks block access to banking apps and Google Password Manager, Google said.
