Google Meet is getting real-time speech translation
- Google announced at its 2025 I/O event that Google Meet will start rolling out real-time speech translation in beta beginning Tuesday in the US.
- This feature leverages Google DeepMind’s large language audio model and aims to enable natural conversations by translating spoken words into the listener's preferred language.
- Initially, the translation will support English and Spanish, with Italian, German, and Portuguese added in the following weeks, while Google plans to extend this to Workspace business customers soon.
- Google stated that the tool maintains the original speaker’s voice, tone, and expression throughout the translation, and likened the experience to including a live interpreter during a call in its early development phase.
- The rollout suggests Google’s broader commitment to integrating AI tools across its platforms, with expectations for expanded availability and further AI-powered features in the coming months.
