Google Cloud Announces 'Gemini Agent' as ‘Universal Agent for Work’

The agent can take objectives, coordinate sub-agents, and run tasks for hours or days while using Google and third-party tools, the company said.

  • On Thursday, Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian unveiled the Gemini agent at the Gemini at Work 2026 event, a new single, universal assistant for enterprise customers handling knowledge work, coding, and question-answering.
  • The agent operates on delegation, where employees describe desired outcomes rather than providing instructions, using sub-agents to "tackle multi-step tasks" across Gmail, Google Docs, and Slack while maintaining persistent memory.
  • Under-the-Hood, a "Smart Routing" capability evaluates workloads to assign them to the best-fitting model, including Google's Gemini and Anthropic's Claude, while organizing knowledge across session, semantic, procedural, and episodic memory types.
  • Functioning as a persistent "coworker," the system receives its own Workspace account and calendar; Google previewed industry-specific versions for legal and financial teams integrating with NetDocuments, FactSet, and LSEG.
  • Google reports nearly 90% of Fortune 100 companies are Gemini Enterprise customers, with adoption including BNP Paribas rolling out to over 65,000 staff and SOMPO constructing more than 10,000 custom agents; Alphabet stock gained about 1.5% in New York.
