GM to Lay Off Hundreds of Workers Amid Need for New Skills
GM says the cuts will remove overlapping roles and create room for hires with artificial intelligence, data and cloud engineering skills.
General Motors confirmed on Monday, May 11, 2026, it is cutting 500 to 600 information technology jobs globally, with management beginning to notify affected employees that morning.
"GM is transforming its Information Technology organization to better position the company for the future," the Detroit automaker stated, aiming to trim costs and prioritize skills in other technology areas.
Spokesman Kevin Kelly said the reductions affect roles across GM's global operations; the company confirmed cuts at its Global Technical Center in Warren but would not disclose Michigan employee numbers.
These reductions follow job cuts from last October, when GM laid off more than 200 employees mostly at its Warren Technical Center, plus temporary layoffs of 1,300 workers at Factory Zero in March.
The company plans to hire workers skilled in artificial intelligence as it works to grow profits despite stagnating U.S. sales, Bloomberg News first reported citing people familiar with the matter.
