GM, LG to make lower-cost EV battery cells in Tennessee
The upgrade will create 500 jobs and is expected to make the plant the first in the world to mass-produce prismatic LMR cells.
- On Tuesday, Ultium Cells, a joint venture between General Motors and LG Energy Solution, announced it will mass-produce prismatic lithium manganese-rich battery cells at its Spring Hill, Tennessee manufacturing facility.
- This upgrade positions the facility as the first globally to mass-produce prismatic LMR cells, which GM claims offer 33% higher energy density than lithium iron phosphate batteries at a comparable cost.
- The companies will invest $1 billion into the site, with upgrades beginning later this year to create 500 new jobs, expanding the total workforce to 1,700 employees by 2028.
- These batteries will power future full-size electric trucks and SUVs, targeting north of 400 miles of EPA range, with the first vehicles expected to roll out in 2028.
- Kurt Kelty, GM vice president of battery and sustainability, stated that adding LMR allows the automaker to "scale efficiently, reach more customers, and support GM's long-term EV strategy" using less expensive manganese.
