Women who take drugs like Ozempic have lower breast cancer risk: study
Researchers found women prescribed GLP-1 drugs had up to 35.1% lower odds of breast cancer, but they said the study was observational.
On Tuesday, University of Pennsylvania researchers reported that women using GLP-1 medications had a 30–35% lower breast cancer diagnosis risk, based on analysis of more than 111,000 overweight women.
Obesity is a known breast cancer risk factor, and researchers suggest GLP-1 drugs may lower incidence by reducing weight and systemic inflammation, though the observational study does not prove causation.
The analysis compared 15,264 GLP-1 users against 96,382 non-users across two cohorts, observing 30.5% lower odds of breast cancer diagnosis in the matched group when controlling for age, race, and BMI.
Study lead author Professor Elizabeth McDonald and her team are seeking funding to launch multi-site clinical trials to determine if GLP-1 medications can definitively prevent breast cancer among high-risk women.
Dr. Gilberto Lopes suggests preventive use may be most sensible for women with elevated risk who need weight loss, though experts emphasize that further randomized testing is required before changing clinical strategies.
On the side of the avenues to be explored, very preliminary but encouraging data show a potential effect on cancer of popular anti-obesity medicines such as Ozempic or Wegovy Rendez
