Globally, More People Expect AI to Cause Job Loss Than Growth
- On Thursday, Pew Research Center released findings indicating residents of 34 out of 37 countries surveyed expect AI to shrink the number of available jobs over the next 20 years rather than grow it.
- Worries run highest in wealthier nations, with 76% of adults in Australia and South Korea and 71% in the United States predicting AI will eliminate rather than create jobs.
- Adults under 35 reported the most concern, marking "a notable departure from five years ago, when older people were somewhat more concerned," the report said.
- Beyond employment, respondents across nearly every country indicated AI will deepen economic divides, with no nation seeing even one-quarter of adults expecting more equal wealth distribution.
- At the WSJ Tech Council Summit, McKinsey leader Kate Smaje emphasized that investment in reskilling is unavoidable, asking if companies spend "an equal and opposite dollar on the change management, the reskilling and upskilling.
