However, the countrys foreign exchange reserves fell more than expected to $3.400 trillion, pressured by a stronger US dollar. The yuan strengthened 0.22% against the greenback during the month.

The People's Bank of China added 740,000 ounces of gold in September and extended its shopping streak to 23 months, while metal lost more than 6% during the month and reached $4,000 an ounce.
