King’s Baton Begins Scottish Tour in Glasgow Ahead of Commonweath Games
John Swinney said £20 million will fund free and low-cost activities for youngsters as the relay visits more than 50 events across Scotland.
On Wednesday, July 1, Team Scotland swimmer Duncan Scott launched the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games Baton Relay, carrying the baton along the River Clyde to signal the start of the final countdown to the sporting event.
Glasgow is hosting this slimmed-down version of the Games featuring 10 sports after the Australian state of Victoria withdrew amid rising cost concerns, ensuring the future of the Commonwealth Games.
The Scottish Government is investing £20 million in summer sporting activities, including £245,000 to support more than 50 free relay events, while officials confirmed the Games will place no call on the public purse.
First Minister John Swinney said the tournament will "showcase Scotland's love of sport to the world," emphasizing that the Games aim to build a lasting legacy beyond the summer of sport.
Moving away from the traditional single baton, each competing team now has its own baton to decorate, with the Scottish relay set to visit around 80 different events and communities across Scotland.
