Girl, 6, dies in hospital after her family lost their lives in Shoreham sea tragedy
Police say CCTV and witness accounts point to a tragic accident, and a file will be prepared for the coroner before an inquest.
On Friday, six-year-old Saja El-Khawas died in hospital, becoming the fourth family member to pass away following a water incident near Shoreham Fort on Tuesday, August 18.
Emergency services responded to Shoreham Fort at 2:40pm on Tuesday after reports of four people in difficulty; her parents Hassan El-Khawas, 55, and Zeina Alayn, 37, plus 14-year-old sister Sara died at the scene.
Sussex Police Chief Superintendent James Collis stated the deaths appear to be a tragic accident after reviewing CCTV footage and witness accounts showed no third-party involvement. A file will be prepared for the coroner.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham called the incident a "terrible family tragedy," while the Beach Residents' Association said it "sent shockwaves across the local community." Local residents left floral tributes at the site.
The Palestinian embassy stated it is "closely monitoring the incident," noting Hassan El-Khawas was a refugee from the Rashidieh Camp on the Mediterranean coast of Lebanon.
