Former F1 Champion Gilles Villeneuve Designated Quebec Historical Figure
The designation will be marked by a plaque, a temporary exhibit and a biopic release later this year, officials said.
On Friday, Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette designated late Formula One driver Gilles Villeneuve a historic figure of Quebec during the Canadian Grand Prix weekend in Montreal.
Nearly 45 years after his departure, Villeneuve remains a motorsport icon; the son of a piano tuner began racing snowmobiles before joining Ferrari and winning his first Grand Prix on Notre-Dame in 1977.
A commemorative plaque will be installed at the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve to mark the designation. Premier Fréchette called it "a gesture that was necessary and long-awaited" alongside Minister of Culture Mathieu Lacombe.
The Société du Parc Jean-Drapeau and the Gilles Villeneuve Foundation announced a temporary exhibition, "Salut Gilles: A Story of Speed in Montréal," opening July 16 featuring rare archives and historic car replicas.
Beyond the designation and exhibit, a biographical feature film titled "Villeneuve: The Rise of a Legend" will debut in cinemas on November 11 following years of development.
