Roaming charges were once an unavoidable part of travelling within Europe. That changed after the European Union banned them inside its borders for European numbers. But outside the EU and for those travelling to Europe from other parts of the world, charges still apply and can reach hundreds of euros, often without warning. I experienced this myself on a recent two-week trip to Turkey.
