Look: Netflix Announces 'Ghostbusters' Series Title
The animated series will debut in 2027 as Sony Pictures and Netflix expand the franchise and spotlight a fundraising drive that topped $500,000.
- On Saturday, showrunners Ben Hibon and Elliott Kalan, with Ghost Corps executive producers Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan, announced Netflix's animated series "Ghostbusters: Night Shift" at New York City's FDNY Hook & Ladder 8 firehouse.
- The announcement coincided with Ghostbusters Day, celebrating the June 8, 1984 release of the original film at the iconic firehouse where the first two movies were filmed.
- Set in 1990s Manhattan, the series follows Ghostbusters during Walter Peck's first mayoral campaign. Peck, a former EPA administrator and original film villain, returned in "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire."
- Reitman and Kenan recognized the "Ghostbusters Give Back" initiative, which raised $666,000 with Sony Pictures' match donation. Buffalo, Los Angeles, and Virginia chapters received "Golden Trap" awards for fundraising efforts.
- Debuting in 2027, "Night Shift" marks the franchise's return to television nearly 30 years after 1997's "Extreme Ghostbusters." "The Real Ghostbusters" aired 140 episodes beginning in 1986.
