Ghana Forestry Commission and Terraformation Advance Forest Restoration Collaboration to Support Climate Resilience, Jobs, and Social Development

On Thursday, the Ghana Forestry Commission and Terraformation announced an expansion of the Keta Lagoon Blue Carbon Project to restore up to 6,000 hectares of degraded mangrove wetlands in the Volta Region.
Initiated in 2024 with partners Regenerative Development of Anlo Wetlands Ltd. and Agrointroductions Ghana , the project has already rehabilitated coastal wetlands by planting more than 3.2 million native mangrove trees.
Utilizing the Verra VM0033 methodology, the project targets planting 12 million trees to remove an estimated 2.3 million tCO2e over 40 years while strengthening coastal barriers against storms.
Beyond ecological benefits, the initiative fosters inclusive economic development by supporting small-scale aquaculture, beekeeping, and local jobs, with a second phase led by AiG launching later this year.
Dr. Hugh C.A. Brown, Chief Executive of the Ghana Forestry Commission, described the project as a national model linking restoration to community leadership, with plans to replicate it across Ghana.
