Up to four million Ukrainians fell victim to the so-called Holodomor (“murder by hunger”) in 1932 and 1933. At that time, there were also deaths in other parts of the Soviet Union, such as Kazakhstan and southern Russia. Several countries have already classified and condemned the Holodomor as genocide against the Ukrainian people.
Kiev and NEOS call for Holodomor to be recognized as genocide
90 years after the famine in Ukraine deliberately caused by Soviet dictator Josef Stalin, the Ukrainian ambassador in Vienna, Vasyl Chymynez, and the NEOS are calling for the Holodomor to be condemned as genocide. “It was a clear genocide against the Ukrainian people by the then Soviet regime because Ukrainians refused to join the Soviet system,” the ambassador's written statement said on Saturday.
