Goodnight REvil and GandCrab? Police Think They've Identified Two of the Biggest Cybercrime Bosses Around

German police say the two suspects led GandCrab and REvil, which caused more than 35 million euros in damage and 130 extortion cases.

  • The German Federal Criminal Police identified 31-year-old Daniil Maksimovich Shchukin and 43-year-old Anatoly Sergeevitsch Kravchuk as leaders of GandCrab and REvil ransomware operations active between 2019 and 2021.
  • Following GandCrab's 2019 shutdown, REvil, also known as Sodinokibi, emerged using the same affiliate model and evolved into a feared machine targeting organizations with more than $100 million in annual revenues.
  • Authorities stated the pair executed at least 130 cyberattacks against victims in Germany, extorting nearly $2 million euros and causing more than 35 million euros in total economic damage.
  • Shchukin, who operated under the alias UNKNOWN, is believed to reside in Krasnodar, Russia, while investigators tracked cryptocurrency wallets containing more than $317,000 in illicit funds.
  • These groups pioneered double extortion tactics, including the Kaseya hack that impacted more than 1,500 businesses, nonprofits, and government agencies across the supply chain.
