A German rescue team used two excavators on Thursday to try to save a beached humpback whale by digging a channel in the sandy shore to help it return to deeper waters.
On the Timmendorfer Strand in Germany, a humpback whale was discovered on a sand bench on Monday morning. The young animal is weakened and can no longer free itself from the Lübecker Bight. Since Tuesday several rescue attempts failed, on Thursday evening another one was aborted. For hours excavators were in use, both from the land and from the water (see video above). For days, helpers with heavy equipment have been trying to free the humpback whale stuck in front of Timmendorfer Strand. The biologist Robert Marc Lehmann is in touch with the animal. In the evening, the colossus moves a little bit, but the rescue measures have been stopped for the time being.
Until sunset, forces are trying to clear the humpback whale in front of Niendorf, the rescue operation in the live stream.
