Georgia Tech Senior Linebacker Kyle Efford Retires Due to Accumulation of Injuries in His Career
On Tuesday, Georgia Tech star linebacker Kyle Efford announced his retirement from football due to accumulated injuries, though he will remain with the Yellow Jackets as a captain and player-coach for the remainder of the 2026 season.
Efford concludes his Georgia Tech career with 250 tackles, becoming the first Yellow Jackets player in 24 years to lead the team in tackles for three consecutive seasons from 2023 to 2025.
Limited to 169 defensive snaps across three games this season, Efford recorded 27 tackles and a sack before retiring, having struggled with a shoulder injury sustained during the Week 2 overtime win against Tennessee.
Head coach Brent Key praised Efford's leadership, stating, "He's not just one of the best linebackers to ever wear the White & Gold, but even more importantly, he's one of the best teammates and leaders."
Georgia Tech continues its season Saturday against the Virginia Tech Hokies in Blacksburg, where young linebackers E.J. Lightsey and Braylon Outlaw must now anchor the middle of the defense.
