Georgia Lawmakers Move to Strike Savannah Ban on Guns in Unlocked Cars
Senate Bill 204 blocks local gun storage rules and allows gun owners to sue cities for $25,000 in damages if ordinances conflict with state law, sponsors say.
- On Tuesday, Georgia lawmakers gave final passage to Senate Bill 204, which nullifies Savannah's ordinance on guns in unlocked cars and now goes to Gov. Brian Kemp's desk.
- City officials, including Derek Mallow, noted that Savannah's 2024 ordinance requiring residents to lock cars with firearms inside led to a 30% drop in reported gun thefts, and Mallow said, `And this has reduced gun thefts by over 30% in one year in the city of Savannah alone.`
- Senate Bill 204 includes provisions that bar cities and counties in Georgia from enacting firearm-storage rules and create a private right allowing lawsuits for up to $25,000, state lawmakers said.
- If Gov. Brian Kemp signs the bill, Mayor Van Johnson said the city will stop issuing citations and will not enforce the ordinance, and he is not worried about the additional liability.
- Critics warned Georgia lawmakers wrongly preempt Savannah’s safety rule, while Mayor Van Johnson criticized ignoring over 200 guns stolen from unlocked vehicles and Sen. Colton Moore said, `We are the supreme law making authority in this state, not some liberal municipality`.
