George Darlington, 87, Helped Usher in Nebraska Football's Historic Run
Darlington helped guide Nebraska through 12 conference titles and a top 10 finish in 31 seasons on Osborne’s staff, the program said.
- George Darlington, the longest-serving assistant coach in Nebraska football history, died Sunday at age 87. The Nebraska athletic department announced his death but did not provide a cause.
- Darlington served under head coach Tom Osborne for 25 seasons, the only assistant on staff for the entirety of Osborne's tenure. The Huskers won national titles in 1994, 95, and 97 during his 30 years with the program.
- Following Osborne's tenure, Darlington coached five seasons under Frank Solich before serving as an assistant at Marshall, Louisiana Tech, Southeast Missouri State, and San Diego. He retired from coaching in 2010.
- Beyond the field, Darlington taught a "Football 101" class for decades and authored a 150-page book on Husker style football in the 1990s. Despite declining health in recent years, he remained a fixture in the Memorial Stadium press box on game days.
- Born in West Virginia, Darlington played college football at Rutgers in the 1950s before earning two degrees at Stanford. His coaching career began in 1962 at Johnson Regional High School in New Jersey.
