Genocide of the Tutsis in Rwanda: Prosecution Insists on Questioning Agathe Habyarimana

Ten days after the decision taken in France to close the investigation against Agathe Habyarimana again without being charged, the national anti-terrorist prosecutor announced on Monday, 26 May, that he had appealed against the order of the investigating judges in which they gave reasons for their refusal to prosecute the widow of the former Rwandan president who had been murdered for "complicit in genocide" in Rwanda in 1994.

For fifteen years, the widow of the former President of Rwanda, who has been tried in France on charges of "arresting genocide", has never been charged in this case, which now sees the investigating judges and the prosecutor's office opposing her.

In 2007, the collective of civil parties for Rwanda founded by the Rémois Dafroza and Alain Gauthier filed a complaint against Agathe Kanziga-Habyarimana, wife of the murdered Rwandan president, for "complicity of genocide and crime against humanity". On 21 May 2025, a hearing was scheduled to rule on his possible indictment... but the judges decided otherwise.

On Monday, 26 May, the National Anti-Terrorist Prosecutor's Office reported that it had filed an appeal for an order to refuse to prosecute Agathe Habyarimana, a Rwandan widow President Hutu murdered in 1994. He requested further investigations into his possible involvement in the genocide of the Tutsis.
