He was born on March 28, 1790, on the ranch of “La Puerta de Andaracua” in the limits of the lagoon, belonging to the jurisdiction of Yuriria, department of Celaya and intendencia de Guanajuato. He was the son of Gertrudis Patiño Viuda de Magaña. As a child, his father died. When he reached adolescence his mother took him to the Villa de Valle de Santiago, to receive primary education.
