Maryland Drivers React to Surging Gas Prices Amid War with Iran

U.S. average gas prices rose 27 cents in one week due to Iran conflict disrupting 20% of global oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, AAA reported.

  • On Friday, AAA reported the U.S. national average for regular gasoline rose to $3.32, an 11.4% increase and the highest retail price of President Trump's second term, while Brent crude climbed to $91 a barrel.
  • After Thursday, Iran's attacks and threats have effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, which handles about 20% of global oil, and QatarEnergy halted 19% of LNG supply.
  • Many drivers on social media reported local pump price increases of 40 to 50 cents this week, and Patrick DeHaan, GasBuddy analyst, warned `That uncertainty is what's driving oil prices up`.
  • Joachim Klement of Panmure Liberum warned `Europe, unfortunately, is even more vulnerable to this energy shock than the U.S`, as the Chemicals benchmark fell 6.3% and Industrials lost 4.7%.
  • BloombergNEF projects much of the pump-price increase will appear within 10 to 13 days and nearly all within 21 days, while analysts warn higher fuel costs will strain American household budgets and raise shipping and retail prices.
