The elections in Gagauzia are once again cause for dispute. Chisinau demands respect for national legislation, while the Comratus invokes special status. Today's blockade has older roots. The Gagausian community has been trapped in the post-Soviet world, dominated by Russian and the influence of Moscow.
There are more than three decades since Gagausian autonomy was created, and Romanian is still a foreign language for many of the inhabitants of this region of the southern Republic of Moldova. Many citizens, especially young people, have understood one thing - knowledge of the language can offer them many opportunities, studies or employment, but also the easy feeling lost of belonging to the Republic of Moldova.
