Government Prepares Profound Change in Basic Education: 1st and 2nd Cycles Will Be Merged

The government wants to start testing the fusion of the 1st and 2nd cycles of basic education in the school year of 2027/28, through pilot projects that could cover an extended number of schools.
"It's not going to be as abrupt a change as it is right now between the 4th and the 5th year, when we move from monodocency to several teachers," said Minister Fernando Alexandre, who also helps that the decision will force teachers to reduce their workload by the 4th year.
Pilot project starts in 2027-2028. The Minister of Education does not help how many schools will be covered, but admits that he would like this to be an "extended" test.
PRESS REVISION The change is related to the teaching load, which is currently 25 hours per week for teachers in the first cycle, while teachers at the other levels of education, at the beginning of their career, have 22 hours
