Furore over Fivemiletown ‘because People Don’t Want Me in This Job’ – Andrew Muir
The union said members lack confidence in the review after officials shot 51 cows and questions grew over whether other options were considered.
The Ulster Farmers Union urged Environment Minister Andrew Muir to resign last month following controversy over the shooting of 51 cows in June near Fivemiletown.
UFU members voted that they "do not have confidence" in the independence of the review into the cattle cull set up by the minister, citing concerns about whether all options were exhausted.
During Assembly proceedings, DUP MLA Harry Harvey told Muir that farmers "have no confidence in you or your department," describing it as a "damning indictment" and asking him to "step aside for someone else who will."
Responding to the criticism on Monday, Muir claimed the DUP owed farmers an apology, stating, "The situation the DUP left for me to inherit and was a disgrace, and you should be ashamed."
Muir told MLAs that attacks stem from his environmental commitment rather than the Fivemiletown incident, asserting the operation was "neither authorised nor directed by me.
