Wainwright Soldier Remembered as Dedicated Brother, Friend at Funeral
Global News will livestream the service as family and colleagues honor the 26-year-old Edmonton-born CAF member killed in last week's fire.
On Sunday, Oct. 25, 2026, family, friends, and Canadian Armed Forces members gathered in Edmonton for the funeral of Sgt. Morgan Wong, one of four service members killed last week at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright.
The fire began on Oct. 17 at a grenade launcher range, a 'permanent danger area' that base firefighters couldn't enter; strong winds spread the flames quickly during a live-fire training exercise.
Sgt. Morgan Wong served with the Loyal Edmonton Regiment and the 3rd Battalion Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry after joining the CAF in 2017 with a Bachelor of Commerce degree and prior deployment to Latvia.
Buddhist practitioners sang and prayed during the service while pallbearers draped a Canadian flag over Wong's casket; family members remembered him as 'extremely proud' to serve the CAF.
The fire caused dozens of casualties and led to four deaths; Wong's sister Megan hopes his life serves as a reminder 'to use the time we have to achieve a life we would be proud of.
