Family says soldier killed in base fire was living his dream
Patricia Farrell says her 23-year-old son died in a training exercise gone wrong as funeral arrangements are finalized.
On Saturday, 23-year-old Pte. Shaun Farrell of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, died during a live-fire training exercise at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Edmonton, one of four soldiers killed when a grass fire overtook the grenade-range exercise.
Patricia Farrell, the soldier's mother, said her son was 'living my dream' when the accident occurred; the family had moved to Canada from South Africa in 2017, and Farrell pursued military service despite living with dyslexia and Asperger's syndrome.
Military officials confirmed the fire began in a permanent danger area on the grenade range and a sudden wind sent flames racing toward 84 soldiers from the 3rd Battalion Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry; 27 remain hospitalized, 13 in critical condition.
As of Thursday, 27 injured soldiers remain in various hospitals with 13 in critical condition, while officials investigate the conditions that led to the fatalities and coordinate ongoing medical support for the affected personnel.
Funeral arrangements for Farrell are being finalized, with his body expected to return to Saskatchewan by week's end; his mother said the support from fellow soldiers and across the country has been "overwhelming" during this time.
