The reduction of VAT on motor fuels is inconsistent with EU law, the European Commission told an RMF FM journalist in Brussels. The European Commission declined to comment directly on the fuel price reduction measures presented by the Polish government. However, EC spokesperson for tax affairs Louise Bogey stated that "the VAT Directive does not provide for the possibility of applying a reduced rate to the supply of motor fuels."
