Fuel crisis uncertainty looms as Croatia gears up for the summer tourism season
Airport officials said 80% of Dubrovnik visitors arrive by plane as Europe faces weeks of jet fuel supplies and higher travel costs.
Global instability triggered by the Iran war and surging fuel prices have brought unpredictability to Dubrovnik, Croatia's top Adriatic Sea destination, threatening its tourism-dependent economy.
Tourism is one of Croatia's key income sources, with around 80% of visitors arriving by plane; the UNESCO-protected city gained global prominence after serving as a Game of Thrones filming location.
Dubrovnik airport recorded a 13% rise in visitors over Easter compared to last year, yet spokeswoman Marina Ruso Mileusnic said, "We are very cautious about the upcoming season."
Miro Draskovic, director of the Dubrovnik Tourist Board, noted some Australian travelers are "facing difficulties traveling toward Europe," though officials work day-to-day to secure the best possible season.
