Concrete-Covered Owl Rescued After Falling Into Mixer in Utah
The owl was rescued from a cement mixer and cleaned over days; it regained flight in two weeks and is expected to be released after feather regrowth.
- Earlier this month, a great horned owl arrived at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah after being found partially encased in concrete at Black Desert Resort, southwestern Utah.
- Rescuers found the owl in a cement mixer in southwestern Utah, its face, chest and right wing coated in dried concrete.
- After making sure the bird could breathe, sanctuary workers spent days cracking concrete with forceps and cleaning feathers using toothbrushes and dish soap; two weeks later, the owl could fly and is recovering in an aviary.
- The sanctuary says it will not release the owl until it sheds damaged feathers and can fly silently, and staff plan to return it near its original natural habitat, not the construction site.
- Bart Richwalski said the owl is a youngster and likely male, which may explain why he ended up in a concrete mixer.
