Canadian Companies Rush Out Lake Ontario Goods After Trump Renaming
Businesses say demand for Lake Ontario-themed items surged after the renaming, with some products selling out quickly and others drawing orders from coast to coast.
In late August, President Donald Trump renamed Lake Ontario to Lake America, prompting Canadian businesses to quickly create merchandise celebrating the original name.
Peace by Chocolate chief executive Tareq Hadhad felt he couldn't ignore the antagonism, creating a 92-gram chocolate bar within a day with a Canadian flag wrapper and Ontario ingredients.
Product and operations manager Alli Piccininni said Province of Canada's Lake Ontario sweatshirt, donating 15 per cent to Indigenous education charity Indspire, sold out "really, really quickly." Additional batches ship in December.
Rockwood, Ont. leather designer Teresa Paul's Lake Ontario coin purses became a "pretty hot commodity" sold in Erin, Ont., while Peace by Chocolate's bar climbed to one of the company's five bestselling products.
One month after the renaming, demand for Lake Ontario merchandise remains high, with Province of Canada preparing additional sweatshirt batches through Christmas; Peace by Chocolate paused United States sales due to tariffs.
