Ships carrying aid, activists and celebrities set sail from Barcelona to Gaza
The largest flotilla yet, with delegations from 44 countries and about 20 vessels, aims to break Gaza's Israeli blockade amid famine and war, organizers said.
- On August 31, the Global Sumud Flotilla left Barcelona with over 1,000 participants aboard 24 ships carrying humanitarian aid, organizers say.
- The Global Sumud Flotilla says it aims to break Israel's maritime blockade and open a humanitarian corridor amid a UN-declared famine affecting 500,000 people in Gaza City.
- Previous attempts were met with interceptions and detentions, organizers note, including the Madleen on June 9 and Handala with 21 detained in late July; weather warnings raised safety concerns for smaller vessels.
- The fleet could reach Gaza around Sept. 14 or 15, organizers say, while Israel says it will enforce maritime security to prevent unauthorized docking.
- Gaza lacks the port facilities needed to receive a large flotilla, and the U.S. temporary port costing about $200 million was dismantled due to weather; this is the fourth attempt this year with more boats departing on Sept. 4, 2025.
