- On Wednesday, the Justice Department indicted Sinaloa Governor Ruben Rocha for conspiring with the Sinaloa Cartel, alleging he accepted bribes to allow the group to operate with impunity and distribute drugs to the U.S.
- According to the indictment, Rocha secured his 2021 election with help from Los Chapitos, the faction led by Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman's sons, in exchange for allowing the group to operate freely.
- The Justice Department also charged Culiacan officials, including the mayor and an ex-police commander, alleging they abused authority in "support of the cartel" and accepted massive bribes.
- Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Thursday that unless the Justice Department provides "clear evidence," the charges are politically motivated, asserting Mexico will not permit foreign interference.
- Rocha denied the allegations, claiming "they lack any truth or foundation whatsoever," while the case complicates relations for the ruling Morena Party, as indictments against sitting senior Mexican politicians remain rare.
