70-Year-Old Man Rescued After Being Lost in the Wilderness for 6 Days
Search teams found the 70-year-old after a resident report and cell phone ping helped narrow the search, authorities said.
On Independence Day, authorities rescued 70-year-old Rondy Packard from a remote wilderness area near Pine Flat Lake, California, after a six-day search following his June 28 fishing trip.
Around 1 p.m. Saturday, a volunteer Air Squadron member spotted Packard's truck in an extremely remote area approximately 20 miles northeast of the lake. An hour and a half later, search teams found him near the vehicle.
Because of the rugged terrain, a CHP helicopter hoisted Packard from the scene to safely transport him out of the area for medical treatment, concluding an extensive ground and aerial search by the Fresno County Sheriff.
Currently receiving medical treatment, Packard is reunited with his family, whom Kathy Curits, lieutenant of the Fresno County Sheriff, described as "incredibly ecstatic."
Authorities had expressed concern during the search about potential food and water shortages as weather heated up, noting the "stress that this family has been under for almost a week now.
