French school protests resume on smaller scale as students return from break
Education Minister Edouard Geffray said the disruption was limited to a handful of schools as students rejected new concessions and planned more blockades.
- On Nov 2, French high school students resumed protests after a two-week break, attempting to blockade schools in Paris, Marseille, and Rennes on a much smaller scale than previous weeks.
- These demonstrations are part of a broader wave of so-called "Gen Z" protests sweeping European countries including Germany, Italy, Belgium, and Albania, driven by grievances over living costs and school conditions.
- Last week, Education Minister Edouard Geffray offered €4 billion to renovate schools and cap class sizes at 28, yet called the current blockade attempts "very marginal" involving only "a few individual schools."
- Despite government proposals creating 15,000 new higher education places, students rejected the offers as insufficient; 16-year-old Meriem told AFP, "We've resumed the movement because we were supposedly given answers, but... it's clearly not enough."
- The unrest represents a significant test for President Emmanuel Macron's minority government as protests have sometimes turned violent with clashes involving police and riots in several cities last month.
