'Abortion Care Is Health Care': Labor Unveils Pitch
The government will spend $30 million over four years to cover abortion costs and pay travel expenses for women who must leave their local area for care.
On Thursday, Premier Ben Carroll announced Victorian Labor will invest $30 million over four years to eliminate out-of-pocket abortion costs and reimburse travel expenses for women in regional communities.
Addressing what advocates describe as a 'postcode lottery,' the policy targets barriers where women face costs exceeding $1000, as 83 per cent of Victorian GPs do not provide abortion services.
Participating private providers will receive payments to deliver medical and surgical abortion care up to 16 weeks, while Labor plans to extend the medical abortion window to 10 weeks and train additional nurses in women's health.
With primary support at 25 per cent in recent polls, Labor is using the pledge to link Opposition Leader Jess Wilson's Coalition to One Nation, which Health Minister Ingrid Stitt's statement said has sought to restrict abortion access.
Despite Wilson's vow that laws would not change under a Coalition government, regional advocates emphasize that ongoing logistical gaps and privacy concerns in small communities continue to threaten women's access to care.
