Frederick: More of the same for J.J. McCarthy, which can’t be the case
McCarthy completed 50% of his passes and Minnesota had no points on seven exhibition drives as backup Carson Wentz outplayed him again.
In Saturday's preseason game against Baltimore, McCarthy struggled to move The Vikings' offense, missing key targets and failing to produce points. Minnesota has now gone scoreless across seven drives in two exhibition games.
Carson Wentz outplayed McCarthy for the second straight week, completing 9 of 11 passes for 92 yards against similar pressure. The backup competition has intensified as The Vikings search for consistent offensive production.
Accuracy plagued the 23-year-old, who completed 50% of his attempts. Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell said missing throws that "we can hit nine times out of 10" hinders offensive success as much as penalties.
Limited by an injury concern, McCarthy saw his day end after one quarter, though he "seemed to be fine." This early exit marks another instance of limited snaps, a carryover from the 2025 campaign.
Persistent struggles suggest McCarthy is not yet ready to run an NFL offense at a high level. Minnesota's decision on his long-term fate may hinge on whether he can make routine plays consistently.
