France’s Envoy Says Carney Admired for Response to ‘Extremely Radical’ U.S.
France’s ambassador praised Carney’s response to U.S. trade pressure and urged faster progress on a Canada-EU partnership ahead of a summit later this month.
French Ambassador Hélène Farnaud-Defromont told The Canadian Press on Friday that France admires Prime Minister Mark Carney's "exemplary" response to "extremely radical" American trade demands.
Prime Minister Carney halted trade talks with Washington in August, accusing the President Donald Trump administration of introducing last-minute demands while vowing to protect Canada's language sovereignty.
Ambassador Farnaud-Defromont said France seeks "win-win" cooperation with Canada in aerospace, defense, energy, quantum technology, and artificial intelligence, viewing it as a "very important and preferred partner."
Canada and the European Union will hold a bilateral summit later this month to discuss a proposed partnership. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen framed this as "associate" membership, though Carney prefers an "alliance of the future."
France is one of 10 European Union countries that never ratified a trade deal with Canada. Farnaud-Defromont emphasized "concrete outcomes" matter more than diplomatic phrasing, urging swift action.
