France to vote against Mercosur trade deal, Macron says
France rejects the EU-Mercosur trade pact over concerns it threatens domestic farmers and food sovereignty despite EU-wide support and a 65% member state majority backing the deal.
- On Thursday, French President Emmanuel Macron announced France will vote against signing the agreement on Friday as farmers blockaded Paris with tractors in protest.
- Amid long-running trade talks and farm concerns, France has opposed the Mercosur agreement clinched in December 2024, citing unfair competition and gaining backing from Poland, Hungary, Ireland and possibly Austria.
- There were 100 tractors in the Paris region and authorities later said 670 protesters were in the capital, causing 150 km of traffic jams as checkpoints were overrun.
- Farm Minister Annie Genevard said France will continue to contest the deal in the European Parliament, and if a qualified majority backs the accord at the Council of the EU, France could be outvoted for the first time.
- Unions have called for protests in Strasbourg on January 20, while the European Commission offered earlier funding and fertilizer duty cuts.
