France to decide next month on extradition of ex-Manitoba law dean in fraud case
The former law dean is accused of misusing more than $600,000 from the University of Manitoba for bills, club meals and Ivy League education.
On Friday, Oct. 16, 2026, former University of Manitoba law dean Jonathan Black-Branch appeared in the Versailles Court of Appeal in France to oppose his extradition to Canada.
French authorities arrested Black-Branch in April after a Canada-wide warrant was issued for fraud over $5,000; he is accused of misusing more than $600,000 from the University.
Hired in 2016, the former dean left the Winnipeg University in 2020 and moved to Europe, with allegations including spending funds on personal bills, meals, and Ivy League education.
The Versailles Court reserved its decision until Nov. 6, when the ruling will determine if Black-Branch must return to Manitoba to face outstanding criminal charges.
Extradition proceedings remain pending on the Nov. 6 ruling, which will clarify Black-Branch's legal status regarding the fraud allegations and settle whether Canada will secure his return.
