Vancouver officer tells hearing Myles Gray was strongest man encountered in career
Seven officers face a misconduct hearing after Gray died during a forceful arrest, and one officer said he had never encountered such strength in 15 years.
On Friday, Vancouver Police Department officer Beau Spencer testified at a public hearing into the 2015 fatal arrest of Myles Gray, describing Gray as the strongest man he encountered in 15 years of policing.
Recounting the August 13, 2015, incident in Burnaby, Spencer arrived to find colleagues "exhausted" after an "unnerving" radio call and hearing an "animalistic roar" from the man they struggled to subdue.
Spencer said he delivered "closed-fist strikes" and held Gray with "all my might" after Gray exhibited a "crazy change of behaviour," appearing "impervious to pain" and like "the Hulk."
Seven officers, including Spencer, face an ongoing public hearing by the Police Complaint Commissioner into alleged misconduct during the confrontation, though all have denied wrongdoing regarding Gray's death.
The commissioner's notice flagged "discrepancies and inconsistencies in statements made by members" and labeled an earlier, dismissed disciplinary process "strangely lopsided," necessitating the current proceedings.
